Bibi Viro Ji

Bibi Viro, daughter of Guru Hargobind (1595-1644) and Mata Damodari, was born at Amritsar on 11 July 1615 CE. She was married to Bhai Sadhu, son of Bhai Dharma, a resident of the village Malla. She was deeply religious as well as a warrior in the mould of her Brothers. The nuptials were performed in May 1629 at Jhabal, 15 km southwest of Amritsar. She was the mother of five sons, Sango Shah, Jit Mall, Gulab Chand, Mohri Chand and Ganga Ram. She raised them well and with deep Sikh values. All the five sons took part in a battle fought on 18 September 1688, between Guru Gobind Singh and Raja Fateh Shah of Srinagar (Garhwal) at Bhangani, 11 km from Paonta, in the present Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh in India. Sango Shah and Jit Mall died in action. Life of Bibi Viro personifies the character of the Sikh woman which the Gurus, beginning with Guru Nanak, were working to wrought. She received arms training along with her brothers; her marriage got delayed because her father, the sixth Nanak, and her brothers were busy warding off the Mughal soldiers; while living her married life, she remains committed to the cause of Sikhi and brings up five sons who fight on the side of the tenth Nanak in numerous battles and two of them embrace martyrdom. The strength of such a woman cannot be put into words, it can only be seen with the eye of the mind.
