ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

But you shall not be taxed by the Messenger of Death, if you walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਰੰਗਿ ॥

Such is the love of the faithless cynic; understand this, O spiritually wise ones, through love and devotion.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨ੍‍ਾਵਣੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥

Immaculate and pure is that cleansing bath, O Nanak, at the sacred shrine of the Guru`s river.

ਪੈਧਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

Wearing clothes and eating food is useless, if the mind is filled with the love of duality.

ਵੇਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥

Seeing and hearing is false, if one speaks lies.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥

O Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; everything else is coming and going in egotism.

ਇਕਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥

Some know how to speak and understand what they are told. Those people are wise and good-looking.

ਇਕਨਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥

Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they know nothing about the mystery of the Word.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਲਿ ਖਰ ਜਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤ ॥

O Nanak, those people are really donkeys; they have no virtue or merit, but still, they are very proud.

ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਜੋ ਬਿੰਦੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥

He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God.

ਰਜਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਪਹੁਚਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥

No one lives long enough to accomplish all he wishes.

ਪੂਰੇ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਘਟਿ ਵਧਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

All that the Perfect Lord does is perfect; there is not too little, or too much.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ॥

Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and become attached to greed and fraud.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; they walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਹ ਜਹ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

O Nanak, wherever I go, I find the True Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ਜਾਇ ॥

Through the Word of the Guru`s Shabad, the Lord abides in the mind, and the hunger for Maya departs.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਊਜਲੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

Immaculate and pure are those humble beings, who, as Gurmukh, merge in the Naam.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤਿਪਤਾਇ ॥

My Lord God is Self-existent and Independent. What does He need to eat to be satisfied?

ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

The mortal is caught in love and emotional attachment to children and spouse, but none of them will be his helper and support in the end.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਰੋਇ ॥

The self-willed manmukhs do not even think of the Name; without the Name, they cry in pain.

ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਾਢਹਿ ਧੋਇ ॥

They are filled with the filth of egotism; they do not wash it away with the Word of the Shabad.

ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਨਿਤ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

They babble and tell lies, and keep on barking, eating the poison of the love of duality.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ॥

By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, and comes to understand the contemplation of God.

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਵਡ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰੁ ॥

O Lord, please be merciful and forgive me; I am a sinner, a great offender.

ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ॥

They wear religious robes and perform all sorts of rituals, but they are ruined; in the love of duality, their world is ruined.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਜਾਇ ਚੜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

Those blessed by the karma of good deeds go and climb the ladder of the Guru.

ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥

Screaming, “Mine, mine!”, they rot and die; they pass their lives in egotism.

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

They act as they are pre-destined; they cannot do anything else.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

By Guru`s Grace, the Name comes to dwell in the mind; keep it enshrined in your heart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਖੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥

O Nanak, the Creator who made this making knows everything.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਚੰਦਾ ਉਗਵਹਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜਹਿ ਹਜਾਰ ॥
ਏਤੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋਦਿਆਂ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰ ॥

If a hundred moons were to rise, and a thousand suns appeared,

even with such light, there would still be pitch darkness without the Guru.

ਸਚੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥
ਸਚੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥

True is Your Praise, True is Your Adoration.

True is Your almighty creative power, True King.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਚੁ ॥
ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੇ ਸੁ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥

O Nanak, true are those who meditate on the True One.

Those who are subject to birth and death are totally false.

ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜਾ ਵਡਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ॥

Great is His greatness, as great as His Name.

Great is His greatness, as True is His justice.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਥਨੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
ਕੀਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਸਰਬ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

O Nanak, His actions cannot be described.

Whatever He has done, or will do, is all by His Own Will.

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਚੈ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

This world is the room of the True Lord; within it is the dwelling of the True Lord.

ਓਥੈ ਸਚੇ ਹੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਚੁਣਿ ਵਖਿ ਕਢੇ ਜਜਮਾਲਿਆ ॥

There, only the Truth is judged true; the sinners are picked out and separated.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

By His Power the nether worlds exist, and the Akaashic ethers; by His Power the entire creation exists.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਵਾਲ ॥

O Nanak, the Lord is fearless and formless; myriads of others, like Rama, are mere dust before Him.

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਗਲੀਈ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

Wisdom cannot be found through mere words. To explain it is as hard as iron.

ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਰਤਣਿ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥

All of the earth, property, wealth and articles are all entanglements.

ਜੇ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਪੁੰਨਹੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਸਦਾਈਐ ॥

If you yearn for goodness, then perform good deeds and feel humble.

ਜੇ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਜਰੁ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਦੀ ਆਈਐ ॥

Even if you remove the signs of old age, old age shall still come in the guise of death.

ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

No one remains here when the count of the breaths is full.

ਬੰਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੰਦੀ ਵੇਖਣ ਕਉ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ॥

The Lord`s bound servants are those who bind themselves to see the Lord`s Vision.

ਦੇ ਦੇ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਗੂਣਾ ਸੋਭ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

They give and give, but ask a thousand-fold more, and hope that the world will honor them.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

O Nanak, the Creator created the creation; the Creator Lord alone knows.

ਉਤਮੁ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

This is the highest thought, that one`s consciousness is attached to the True Lord.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

In ego they are ignorant, and in ego they are wise.

They do not know the value of salvation and liberation.

ਹਉਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

When one understands ego, then the Lord`s gate is known.

Without spiritual wisdom, they babble and argue.

ਹਉਮੈ ਏਹਾ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

This is the nature of ego, that people perform their actions in ego.

ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀਰਘ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਭੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

Ego is a chronic disease, but it contains its own cure as well.

If the Lord grants His Grace, one acts according to the Teachings of the Guru`s Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਟਿਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਤਗੁ ॥

O Nanak, without the True Name, of what use is the frontal mark of the Hindus, or their sacred thread?

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਤਿਨ੍‍ੀ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

He alone receives the Truth, unto whom You give it; then, he practices Truth.

ਮੂਰਖ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨ੍‍ੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

The fools do not know the Truth. The self-willed manmukhs waste their lives away in vain.

ਅਲੁ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥
ਮੂਰਖਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

One who eats filth and throws ashes on his head

the blind fool loses his honor.

ਰਹੈ ਬੇਬਾਣੀ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥
ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥

One who lives in the wilderness, in cemetaries and cremation grounds

that blind man does not know the Lord; he regrets and repents in the end.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਤੇ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

O Nanak, when the Lord grants His Grace, He is obtained.

He becomes free of hope and fear, and burns away his ego with the Word of the Shabad.

ਇਕਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਨ੍‍ ਿਆਪਣਾ ਅਣਹੋਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇਦੇ ॥
ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਕਾ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੋਰਿ ਉਤਮ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਦਾਇਦੇ ॥

Some do not understand their origins, and without cause, they display their self-conceit.

I am the Lord`s minstrel, of low social status; others call themselves high caste.

ਤਿਨ੍‍ ਮੰਗਾ ਜਿ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ॥

I seek those who meditate on You.

ਕੂੜੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਜਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
ਕੂੜੁ ਮੰਡਪ ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾੜੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੈਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

False is the king, false are the subjects; false is the whole world.

False is the mansion, false are the skyscrapers; false are those who live in

Fareed, become the grass on the path,

if you long for the Lord of all.

Fareed, those who did not enjoy their Spouse when their hair was black – hardly any of them enjoy Him when their hair turns grey.

So be in love with the Lord, so that your color may ever be new.

Fareed, my eyes have become weak, and my ears have become hard of hearing.

The body`s crop has become ripe and turned color.

See, Fareed, what has happened: sugar has become poison.

Without my Lord, who can I tell of my sorrow?

See, Fareed, what has happened: your beard has become grey.

That which is coming is near, and the past is left far behind

Fareed, do not turn around and strike those who strike you with their fists.

Kiss their feet, and return to your own home.

Fareed, if you have a keen understanding, then do not write black marks against anyone else.

Look underneath your own collar instead

If I had known that my robe would come loose, I would have tied a tighter knot.

I have found none as great as You, Lord; I have looked and searched throughout the world.
