Akhand Paath means a continuous reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Akhand Paath is supposed to be carried out by devout Sikhs, or by professional readers (Paathis). But nowadays, we have made it just a ritual to organize an Akhand Paath at our place. It all started with firstly shifting the duty of performing the Paath to Paathis, who just read the scripture for a small amount of money without even intending to make the Paath fruitful to anyone, or without even making people aware of what an Akhand Paath means. Then the things got worsen with time; and now we have a new kind of Paaths – the Readymade Akhand Paaths. You just have to call up the Sevadar of a Gurudwara, and as soon as you ask them you want an Akhand Paath to be held for some purpose in the Gurudwara, the Sevadar not ashamed of making fun of the customs of Sikhi, tells you that you can get Ardas performed for an Akhand Paath that has recently been done. Akhand Paaths are fruitless; rather they are disgrace to the visit of Guru Granth Sahib to our place, if we do not perform the Paath ourselves, or at least not listen to the Paath performed by the Paathis. Let us get awakened before the Bipar (the Brahmanical rituals) become an inseparable part of our customs and culture. May Waheguru bless us all! |
