CONTROVERSY ON TWO GRANTHS IN SIKH RELIGION
Guru Granth sahib was first compiled by Guru Arjan Dev ji in 1604 and thereafter Guru Gobind singh ji finally compiled (Damdami Bir) by adding Bani of ninth Guru Tegh Bahadur and declared that Guru Granth as the Guru of Sikh religion during 1708. Almost since three centuries Sikhs paid obeisance to this Granth as their Guru through out the world and sought spiritual guidance from Holy Hymns.
But during this time another Granth appeared from nowhere called Dasam Granth. This Granth found place adjacent to Guru Granth sahib at least on two Akal Takhats at Hazur Sahib and Patna sahib. And it started finding its place in other Gurdwaras too. It was claimed that this Granth, (which was earlier called Bachittar Natak) was written by Guru Gobind singh. But when it was revealed that certain contents from this Granth were not matching with the pious character of Guru Gobind singh rather of highly doubtful nature being explicitly pornographic. Though certain text did appear as Gurbani of Guru Gobind singh. Some scholars smelt vested interests in establishing this Granth along with Guru Granth sahib to malign the Sikh religion. It was doubted that some text was deliberately mixed knowingly to create controversies in the religion. The controversy could not be solved and kept hanging fire adding to the pile of problems already being faced in the religion. Those who were supposed to address these problems thought it better to bid their time and kept sweeping them under the carpet. Some scholars were of the view to edit the Granth to identify the Bani of Guru Gobind singh for segregation. Then pertinent question arose that since Guru Gobind singh himself had decided not to include his own verses in Guru Granth sahib it will be of no use to carry out this research. Whatever is said and done one thing is clear that in any religion and for that matter in Sikh religion there can be only one Holy Scripture and that is Guru Granth sahib. The Sikh clergy has to find ways and means to solve this long pending issue. This simple controversy must come to an end.
