Amritsar | November 21, 2005 6:08:47 PM IST

Amritsar hosted the first-ever "Mr.Singh International Contest" over the weekend at the local Khalsa College, and Harpreet Singh emerged as the winner. The contest was held with the objective of popularising turban wearing among the Sikh youth.

The event was organised by the Akal Purkh Ki Fauj (APKF) and its Director, Jaswinder Singh, said that the Sikh fashion show was aimed at infusing a sense of pride amongst Gen Next Sikhs.

"First of all, I would like to thank God for putting an idea into my mind and encouraging me to fulfill my dream. He also associated me with those personalities who helped me in making my dream come true. All Sikhs who believe in following their religion have contributed in fulfilling my dream. Through this show, I am trying to promote the tradition of keeping turbans."

Harpreet Singh bagged the Mr. Singh International award in the contest. Mr.Singh International, Harpreet Singh said, "I am very happy as I have been selected as Mr. Singh International. I appreciate my community and give a message that all surds should promote Sikhism by keeping their turbans and not becoming cut surds."

Actor Raj Babbar had all praise for APKF and said, "Akal Purkh Ki Fauj has done a great job."

The contest was an eye opener for those who have forgotten to tie their turbans. The initial screening for the contest was done in various parts of India and distant shores of America. Contestants underwent a rigorous 15-day training in personality development before the event. (ANI)
