The youth of NSW have taken over the State Parliament for three days of debate in the 2006 YMCA Youth
Parliament, John Aquilina, the State Member for Riverstone, has advised.
"The students, presided over by Youth Governor Mr Swaren Veygal from Ballina, drafted and debated
proposed new laws on issues of particular concern to young people," Mr Aquilina said.
"The Youth Parliament was a great success, thanks in large part to the tremendous efforts put in by Mr
Veygal.
"One of the bills debated was to impose a surcharge on plastic bags to help protect our environment.
"The students debated serious issues, and did it intelligently and articulately.
"It was much more than a talk-fest. Previous Youth Parliaments have debated bills that have then been
passed into law by the real State Parliament. The NSW Government listens to them," he continued.
The Youth Parliament was opened by Reba Meagher, the NSW Youth Minister.
Mr Aquilina officiated at the closing ceremony.
He congratulated the students on the success of the Youth Parliament, and encouraged them to develop
their leadership skills and become further involved in the democratic process.
