The
New Arrival
Paintings
in Hospitals Scotland (PiHS), the charity which puts works of art into
hospitals and healthcare centres throughout Scotland, commissioned this
new work in 2003 for its highly regarded collection of contemporary
art. Entitled “The New Arrival”, the commission addressed
the need for more works in the PiHS collection of relevance to Scotland’s
ethnic minorities. It was made been possible with the help of the Scottish
Arts Council and very generous support from the Asian community itself
including two businesses: Free World Trading Ltd, Margaret Best Optometrist
and several individuals, along with other individuals from the wider
community.
The
painting celebrates the South Asian community in Scotland through a
cheerful depiction of a modern Asian family with their newborn baby,
being seen off by the staff of a Scottish hospital and by some of those
who have supported the commission. These include the colourful Baron
Singh of Lesmahagow, wearing his famous Singh tartan, and the Chairman
of The Friends of Paintings in Hospitals Scotland, the charity which
raises funds for PiHS.
“I
feel that paintings not only enhance otherwise bleak surroundings but
are also an essential part of the healing process” Baron Singh,
sponsor of the Singh sisters’ painting.
