NOTE FROM DYA SINGH

Dear nephews and nieces, parents and fellow Sewadars,

A Warm and affectionate Waheguru Fateh.

I am honoured to be involved in this Annual Sikh Youth Samelan (Camp) in Australia. I believe the reason why I have been invited is because I believe in an open-minded, active and 'user-friendly' Sikhi as I think Guru Nanak Dev Ji meant it to be - a tool for self-improvement, self-confidence and a sense of identity within a multicultural, multifaith and multi-racial world society. This is in contrast to a Sikhi which is 'Indian' and has in some cases, degenerated into being a prescription for rituals, like a number of other religions. I draw on my birth and upbringing in a Gursikh family, son of a Sikh Missionary and Gurmukhi teacher, in Malaysia and a very happy and valuable time with the Sikh Naujawan Sabha,Malaysia.

First and foremost, Sikhi believes very strongly in EQUALITY: whether you are from India, Malaysia, Australia, Kenya, England, USA or born in any other country; whether you are male or female; whether you are black, coloured or white; whether you are young, middle aged or old; whether you are fully conversant with Sikhi, carry out all Sikh disciplinary requirements, or don't; you know very little, or nothing about Sikhi; whether a person belongs to another faith, religion or way of life with the right to practice his/her faith or religion; AND whatever caste you belong to, a good Sikh does not look down upon 'anyone'.

This is the beginning to being a 'good Sikh in multicultural Australia'.

Beyond this we have all come together to learn a little more about ourselves as Sikhs, what Sikhi really is, make friends, and most importantly have a good time!!

I will tell you about my adventures with other Sikh and non-Sikh communities around the world singing Gurbani with a multi-racial group accompanied by my daughters who are all proud Sikhs - their personal 'world' Sikh identity. I will also share my thoughts with you about Sikhi and how Sikhi has made me what I am.

So, let the fun begin !!!!

Waheguru Ji's blessings be upon you.
(Uncle) Dya Singh

CAMP QUIZ - BY DYA SINGH

On the last day of the camp there will be a CAMP QUIZ. There will be prizes given out to the 'team' that wins. Below are the rules, parameters and conditions of the Quiz. May the best team win!!!

1. The Camp Quiz will be based on all that you are going to learn at the camp and also all the information in the Samelan Guide.
2. Uncle Dya Singh Ji will be the Quiz master. He will set all questions.
3. A 'Panel of Judges' will oversee all proceedings and will have the power to overrule answers or decisions of the Quiz Master.
4. All Camp Participants will be divided into five groups of equal numbers. Each group will consist of equal numbers of those below age 12 and those above age 12.
5. Questions will be set in the Senior (above 12) and the Junior (below 12) categories.
6. Each group must give answers after consultation. Each group will nominate one group member to answer. Answers must be given in rotation but consultation can take place.

WALTZING MATILDA

Once a jolly swagman camped by a Billabong
Under the shade of a Coolabah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

CHORUS:
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
"Who'll come a-waltzing Maltida with me?"
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled,
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"
Down came a jumbuck to drink at the Billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me".
Up rode the Squatter mounted on his thoroughbred,
Down came the Troopers - one, two, three
"Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?",
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me".
Up jumped the swagman and jumped in that Billabong,
"You'll never catch me alive" said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that Billabong:
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

DISCUSSION TOPIC:
WESTERN, EASTERN OR IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE 'COOL'?

As Sikhs we are never sure whether it is 'cool' to act like a Westerner or an Easterner. We get swayed by 'peer pressure' and feel a need to be 'cool' by smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, being a 'party animal', going 'clubbing', listening to 'pop' music, hanging around in supermarkets wearing scanty clothes (girls) and grossly over-sized clothes (guys) and walking like American-African pop stars and giving high fives.

OR

We think we are 'cool' if we listen to loud 'bhangra' music, look like Shah Rukh Khan or Madhuri Dixit did in the most recent Bollywood movie, and keep up-to-date with the most recent Bollywood gossip and movies!

The quick answer to that is BE A COOL KHALSA! Do your own 'thing' and be proud of it. Find your own 'Sikh' identity.

Below is a general comparison and an insight of the philosophical differences in attitude between Westerners and Easterners. What is the ideal? Make up your own mind.

EASTERN

The Love of Life is the ideal
Poverty - a sign of spiritual elevation

Austerity and renunciation

Self-abnegation is the secret of survival
Accept the world as it is
Selfless service

Passive, like to Contemplate
Live in time, always at rest

Live in peace with nature

RELIGION !!
Contemplate on meaning of life

Freedom of Silence, Meditation

Marry first, then fall in love
Marriage beginning of love affair
Marriage is a dissoluble bond
Love is mute, concealed

Taught from the cradle to want less and less
In the sunset years, renounce the world and
Prepare for the hereafter
WESTERN

Conquest is the goal
Poverty is a sign of degradation

Gracious and elegant living and enjoyment

Self-assertiveness - key to success
Try to change it for the better
Charity and Professional Service

Active, like to act
Live in space, always on the move.

Impose one's will on nature

SCIENCE !!
Physics, proof

Freedom of Speech, Articulation

Love first, then marry
Marriage-happy end of a romance
Marriage is a contract
Love is vocal, public

Urged every day to want more and more

Retire to enjoy the fruits of a life
of labour and wealth accumulation

GOLDEN RULES OF SIKHI

NAAM JAPNAI

Naam Marag emphasizes daily devotion to the remembrance of Waheguru. "Meditation of the Lord is the highest of all deeds: through which myriads obtain release, through which the thirst (of desire) is quenched: through which one becomes all knowing: through which the fear of death goes away: through which all desires are fulfilled: through which the dirt of the mind is cleansed as the nectar of "Waheguru Naam" is absorbed in the mind"
Guru Nanak, Raag Gauri Sukhmani

VAND SHAKNA

Vand Shakna: Sharing with others is also a social responsibility. The individual is expected to help others in need through charity. "He who eats what he earns through his honest labour, and from his hand gives something in charity; he also, O Nanak, knows the true ways of life"
Guru Nanak, Raag Sarang, pg. 1245

BASIC NAAM SIMREN AND GURSANGEET

MOMENTS OF REFLECTION

Ten dollars look so big when we take it to the Gurudwara,
But so small when we take it to the store.

60 minutes is long when we are sitting in the Gurudwara,
But short when shopping, playing or watching T.V.

We believe what a person or newspaper says,
But question what Guru Ji says.

We can't think of anything to say when we pray,
But don't have any difficulty when we gossip.

We need 2 or 3 weeks to fit a prayer/kirtan event into our schedule,
But have no problem adjusting for a social event at the last minute.

We get thrilled when a football game goes into extra time,
But complain when a Gurudwara service takes longer than usual.

We scramble to get a front row seat at a bhangara concert,
But look for a back row seat at the Gurudwara.

It is diffcult to share Guru Ji's words with others,
But simple to spread rumours.

MY ANSWERED ARDAS

I asked WAHEGURU for Strength
And WAHEGURU gave me difficulties to make me strong.

I asked WAHEGURU for Wisdom
And WAHEGURU gave me Problems to solve.

I asked WAHEGURU for Prosperity
And WAHEGURU gave me Brain and Brawn to work.

I asked WAHEGURU for Courage
And WAHEGURU gave me Danger to overcome.

I asked WAHEGURU for Love
And WAHEGURU gave me Troubled people to help.

I asked WAHEGURU for Favours
And WAHEGURU gave me Opportunities.

I RECEIVED NOTHING I WANTED
I RECEIVED EVERTHING I NEEDED
